You wipe the counters. You run the water. Twenty minutes later, that smell is back.

Sink stink is stubborn because the source isn't the sink itself. It's the film of food, grease, soap scum, and moisture that collects in the places you never actually scrub: the underside of the drain collar, the rubber splash guard, the seam where the basin meets the counter, and the cabinet floor underneath where slow drips have soaked into the wood.

Rinsing the basin doesn't touch any of that. Which is why the smell keeps coming back.

Step 1: Clear the drain

Start with a physical flush. Pour a full kettle of hot water down the drain to loosen grease, then follow with a half cup of baking soda and a cup of white vinegar. Let it sit for ten minutes and flush again with hot water.

If your sink has a strainer basket or stopper, pull it out. The underside is usually where the worst of the buildup lives. Scrub it with dish soap and a stiff brush.

Step 2: Scrub what you can reach

Use a bottle brush or an old toothbrush on the drain collar and the first few inches inside the drain opening. This is the part most people skip, and it's where a surprising amount of the smell is coming from.

While you're there, check under the sink. Look for water stains on the cabinet floor, a slow drip at the P-trap, or swollen particleboard. A leak you haven't noticed will keep generating odor no matter how many times you clean the basin above it. If you find one, fix the leak first. No spray solves a plumbing problem.

Step 3: Eliminate the odor that's left

Cleaning removes the buildup. It doesn't always remove the smell that has already soaked into the surfaces around it.
