Running the disposal doesn't clean the disposal. It grinds food and sends it down, but a layer of it stays behind on every surface inside, and that layer is what you're smelling.

The two worst spots are almost always the same:

The rubber splash guard. The underside of those rubber flaps is coated in food residue. It's the most common source of disposal smell by a wide margin, and almost nobody ever looks at it.

The grind chamber walls and the upper collar. Food splatters up above the blades and sits there, out of the water flow, never getting rinsed.

Step 1: Clear the chamber

With the disposal off, run cold water and grind a tray of ice cubes. The ice knocks residue off the chamber walls and the grinding components. Adding a handful of coarse salt with the ice helps scour more aggressively.

Follow with a cut lemon or a few citrus peels if you like, though understand that's a cosmetic step. It adds a fresh smell over the top. It doesn't remove what's causing the problem.

Step 2: Clean the splash guard by hand

This is the step that actually changes things.

Most splash guards lift out. If yours does, pull it, wash both sides with dish soap and a scrub brush, and be prepared for what you find underneath.

If it's fixed in place, fold the flaps up one at a time and scrub the underside with a toothbrush and dish soap. Get the collar it sits in, too.

Then wipe down the inside of the drain opening and as far into the collar as you can reach.

Step 3: Deodorize the drain

Cleaning removes the buildup. It doesn't always remove the odor that has soaked into the rubber, the sink basin, and the cabinet underneath.

- Both sides of the rubber splash guard until it's soaked

- The cabinet floor beneath the sink, which absorbs every drip that has ever run down the disposal housing
- The trash can, if it lives in that cabinet

Why masking fails
